Last month, while working on an important project with my colleague, we encountered a mishap. I accidentally spilled coffee on some crucial documents right before a big presentation. Feeling terrible, I quickly apologized, and we had to work late into the night to recreate the lost work. My colleague was very understanding and patient, which I deeply appreciated.
To show my gratitude, I decided to buy a gift during my upcoming business trip. I traveled by plane to another city for a meeting. During the flight, I had some time to think about the perfect gift. Once I arrived, I explored the local shops and managed to find a beautiful bracelet that I thought would be a great souvenir. I carefully chose the right one, ensuring it was special.
I wrapped it nicely and gave it to my colleague when I returned. The gesture was well-received, and it helped strengthen our working relationship. It was a small token of my appreciation, showing my dedication to our team’s success and my commitment to maintaining a positive work environment.

Part 5
Discussion
Do you think giving a gift to a colleague can improve your working relationship? Why or why not?
On this topic, you need to talk about the potential effects or negatives of giving gifts to colleagues on professional relationships.
Opinion preparation (3 minutes)
- Student has 2-3 mins to think about.
- Suggesting points:
- Positive aspect: friendship, happy team, encouragement, recognition, motivation
- Potential negatives: unfairness, pressure, rule from workplace, misunderstanding, cultural differences
Talk (5 minutes)
- Student has 2-4 mins to present their opinion.
- Teacher helps student to expand their ideas, think critically & more views about this topic (by asking more questions about this topic).
Example
In my opinion, giving a gift to a colleague can positively influence your working relationship. It serves as a gesture of appreciation and acknowledgment, which can make the recipient feel valued and respected. This kind of recognition can enhance interpersonal connections, leading to improved communication and teamwork. For instance, a simple yet thoughtful gift, like a planner or a plant for their desk, can show consideration for their preferences and contribute to a more supportive work atmosphere.
However, it’s crucial to ensure that the gift is appropriate and modestly priced to avoid any potential misunderstandings or feelings of obligation. The primary purpose should be to express genuine appreciation without expecting anything in return. By maintaining this approach, gift-giving can strengthen work relationships and foster a more collaborative and friendly environment.
Part 5
Discussion
If a colleague makes a mistake that affects your work, do you think an apology is enough? Why or why not?
On this topic, you need to talk about whether an apology from a colleague is sufficient when their mistake impacts your work
Preparation (3 minutes)
- Student has 2-3 mins to think about their opinion.
- Suggesting points: saying sorry, make friends again, talking openly, fixing the problem, avoiding future mistakes, extra work,….
Talk (5 minutes)
- Student has 2-4 mins to present their arguments.
- Teacher helps student to expand their ideas, think critically & more views about this topic (by asking more questions about this topic).
Example
In my opinion, when a colleague makes a mistake that affects your work, just saying sorry is not always enough. For example, if they forget to send an important email, and this causes a delay in your project, their apology is good because it shows they know they made a mistake. This can help keep a good relationship and open talking. However, saying sorry doesn't fix the delay in the project.
They need to also help fix the problem, like by quickly sending the email and making sure it doesn't happen again. This shows they really mean their apology. Also, if this mistake gives you extra work, they should help you with it. Just saying sorry doesn't remove the extra tasks you now have to handle. So, while an apology is important for keeping good feelings, taking action to solve the issues caused by the mistake is also very necessary.
Part 5
Discussion
Do you enjoy traveling by plane, or do you prefer another mode of transportation? Explain your choice.
On this topic, discussing your preferences for traveling by plane or using other transportation methods, highlighting the advantages of each based on your personal experiences or preferences
Preparation (3 minutes)
- Student has 2-3 mins to think about their opinion.
- Suggesting points:
- Traveling by plane: fast, far places, exciting, safe, …
- Other modes of transportation: see more (landscape, cities,…), less scary, cheaper, flexible
Talk (5 minutes)
- Student has 2-4 mins to present their arguments.
- Teacher helps student to expand their ideas, think critically & more views about this topic (by asking more questions about this topic).
Example
I enjoy traveling by plane, especially when I need to go to far places quickly. For example, if I want to visit my family in another country, flying is the fastest way. It takes only a few hours by plane, but it would take days if I used a car or a train. Also, flying is exciting because you can see the clouds and the earth from high up in the sky, which is a unique view.
However, I also like traveling by train for shorter trips. Trains let me see more of the countryside and cities. It's less scary than flying because some people are afraid of heights, and it's usually cheaper than a plane ticket. So, while I prefer planes for long distances because they are fast and exciting, trains are great for enjoying the journey and saving money on shorter trips.
