Part 4
Debate 1
Topic: Is it better to have many small goals or one big goal?
In a debate on this topic, you need to talk about whether it’s better to have many small goals or one big goal. Say what is your opinion, give reasons, and use simple examples.
Argument preparation (3 minutes)
Student has 2-3 mins to think about their arguments.
Suggesting points:
- Support for many small goals: easy to achieve, feel good often, change plans easily.
- Against for many small goals: may forget the big picture, not very challenging, too many changes.
- Support for one big goal: very motivating, big success feels great, stay focused.
- Against for one big goal: can be scary, lots of pressure, takes a long time.
Debate (8 minutes)
Student has 2-4 mins to present their arguments.
Teacher helps student to expand their ideas, think critically & more views about this topic (by asking more questions about this topic).
Sample answer
In my opinion, it is better to have many small goals than one big goal.
First, small goals are easier to finish. For example, if I want to get better at math, I can set a small goal to do one math problem a day instead of a big goal like winning a math contest. This makes me feel good when I finish each problem.
Second, small goals help you keep going. If you have only one big goal, it can feel too hard and make you want to give up. But if you have small goals, you can see your progress, and it makes you want to keep trying.
However, some people might say that small goals do not help you achieve big things. That might be true, but having many small goals can lead to a big achievement over time.
So, I think having many small goals is better because it helps you stay motivated and see your progress.
Debate 2
Topic: Is it better to read books in print or digitally on a tablet/e- reader?
In a debate on this topic, you need to talk about whether it’s better to read books in print or digitally on a tablet/e-reader, students need to address various aspects of both mediums.
Argument preparation (3 minutes)
Student has 2-3 mins to think about their arguments.
Suggesting points:
- Print books:
- Support: tactile experience, less eye strain, no battery required, easier annotation.
- Against: inconvenience, environmental concerns, cost & space
- Digital books (e-readers/tablets):
- Support: convenience, adjustable features, instant access, interactive elements
- Against: battery dependence, eye strain & blue light exposure, less emotional engagement
Debate (8 minutes)
Student has 2-4 mins to present their arguments.
Teacher helps student to expand their ideas, think critically & more views about this topic (by asking more questions about this topic).
Sample answer
I think it is better to read books in print than digitally on a tablet or e-reader.
First, reading print books is good for your eyes. When you read on a tablet, your eyes can get tired because of the light from the screen. But with print books, there is no light, so it is easier on your eyes.
Second, print books feel nice to hold. You can turn the pages, and it feels good. You don’t get this feeling from a tablet.
However, some people might say tablets can hold many books and are good for traveling. That’s true, but still, print books are better because you don’t need to charge them. With a tablet, if the battery dies, you can't read your book.
So, I like print books more because they are better for your eyes and nice to use.
Debate 3
Topic: Are dogs better pets than cats, or is it the other way around?
In a debate on this topic, you need to talk about whether dogs are better pets than cats or vice versa. Say what is your opinion, give reasons, and use simple examples.
Argument preparation (3 minutes)
Student has 2-3 mins to think about their arguments.
Suggesting points:
- Dogs:
- Support: loyalty to owners, protection for the home, encourages exercise through walking, can be trained
- Against: need more space, require more attention and time, costlier due to food, training, and healthcare
- Cats:
- Support: independent nature, require less space, low maintenance costs, good for indoor living
- Against: less interactive, can be aloof, allergies to cats are common, Less likely to be trained for tasks or protection
Debate (8 minutes)
Student has 2-4 mins to present their arguments.
Teacher helps student to expand their ideas, think critically & more views about this topic (by asking more questions about this topic).
Sample answer
I think cats are better pets than dogs.
First, cats are very independent. They don’t need you to walk them outside. This is good if you are busy.
Second, cats are quieter than dogs. They usually don’t make as much noise, which is nice in a flat or close neighbors.
However, some people might say dogs are better because they are more loyal and can be trained to do things like fetching. That's true, but cats are easier to take care of because they clean themselves and are good even if you are not home all day.
So, I believe cats are better pets because they are easy to take care of and quiet.
Debate 4
Topic: Is it more important to save water or to save electricity?
In a debate on this topic, you need to talk about whether it is more important to save water or to save electricity. Say what is your opinion, give reasons, and use simple examples.
Argument preparation (3 minutes)
Student has 2-3 mins to think about their arguments.
Suggesting points:
- Water:
- Support: Essential for life: drinking, cooking, cleaning; scarcity of freshwater resources; helps nature
- Against: good recycling methods, less effect on energy use
- Electricity:
- Support: Reduces pollution, saves money & energy
- Against: more renewable energy, devices use less power
Debate (8 minutes)
Student has 2-4 mins to present their arguments.
Teacher helps student to expand their ideas, think critically & more views about this topic (by asking more questions about this topic).
Sample answer
In my opinion, it is more important to save water than to save electricity.
First, water is needed for life. We use water every day for drinking, cooking, and cleaning. Without enough water, we cannot survive.
Second, water is scarce. Many places in the world do not have enough water. If we save water, we can help make sure there is enough for everyone.
However, I know saving electricity is also important because it helps reduce pollution and saves money. But, water is more basic and essential than electricity. Without water, we have a big problem.
So, I think saving water is more important because it is essential for life and it is very scarce in many parts of the world.
