Part 4
Reading comprehension
Read the article and answer questions.
Teacher helps student correct their pronunciation.
This weekend was my friend’s anniversary, and they hosted a big outdoor party. It was in the countryside, quite far from the city. I decided to ride my motorcycle there because the fare for the bus seemed high, and I didn’t want to deal with the subway during rush hour. Plus, it was thrilling to ride through the open roads.
Everyone was asked to bring something for the potluck. I made a fruit salad because it’s easy and usually a hit. The party was terrific! We played games, had a dance contest, and laughed a lot. It was exhausting, but in the best way.
In the evening, we planned to continue the celebration at a restaurant downtown. However, a traffic jam meant we couldn’t get there. Instead, we ate at a small vegetarian place nearby. I was starving and a bit unsure at first since I’m not vegetarian, but the food was delicious! It was a nice change.
Check your understanding
What mode of transport did the narrator use to get to the anniversary party, and why?
What did the narrator contribute to the potluck?
How did the narrator feel about the unexpected change to vegetarian food?
Sample answer
- The narrator rode their motorcycle to the party to avoid high bus fares and subway crowds.
- The narrator made and brought a fruit salad to the potluck.
- The narrator was pleasantly surprised and found the vegetarian food to be a delicious alternative.

Just my colleagues and their families. There will be about 20 of us.

Bob

Alice
We’re encouraging everyone to bike there if they can. It’s close and good for the environment.
What will you do at the party?

Bob

Alice
We’ve planned a treasure hunt and some sports. It should be fun and active.
And after the activities, where will you go?

Bob

Hey everyone, it's Emma here! So, for this weekend, we've got something special planned. Saturday morning, we're all heading to Pine Lake Park. It's a bit of a journey from downtown, but don't worry, the bus fare is cheap, and it's not too uncomfortable even if it's a bit crowded during rush hour.
Once we get there, we've lined up a bunch of fun outdoor activities. There's going to be a mini sports contest with prizes and a treasure hunt around the lake. I'm sure we'll all be exhausted after a day in the sun but in a good way!
After we've had our fill of fun, we're going to head back into the city for dinner. We have a reservation at 'The Veggie Delight Restaurant' – it's that new vegetarian place that's just opened up downtown. I know a few of you are hardcore meat-lovers, but I've heard the flavors are out of this world, and it's a great chance for a change. Plus, it's super convenient from the bus stop.
We should be back in the city by 7 PM, just in time for our reservation. The restaurant is right in the heart of downtown, so if we do hit traffic, we can always leave the bus and walk the rest of the way. It's going to be a terrific day!
